The deutzia genus includes about fifty species of deciduous shrubs.
This type of plant is native to China, Japan and Mexico. The deuiases are cultivated as ornamental plants and thanks to their characteristics they can be suitable for terraces, since their height never exceeds 2-3 meters and can be pruned every year without compromising the development of the plant.
The leaves of this variety are opposite, toothed, green gray, rough to the touch.
The brown bark is scaled.
The flowers are white or purple and are axillary grouped in spikes or clusters.
Rough deuzia is a variety from China and Japan. It is quite widespread thanks to its characteristics that make it a very rustic and resistant plant, so much so that it does not suffer from the late spring frosts after which it presents a flowering composed of simple white flowers that may also have pink shades.
There deutzia scabra is an ornamental plant, reaching a height of two to three meters and a diameter of 1.20-1.80 m.
The bark is brown and comes off the branches.
The leaves of this plant are ovate and ovate-lanceolate, pale green.
The flowers of deuzia are cup-shaped, white, suffused with pink outside. It flowers in June-July with flowers gathered in upright panicles.
The following varieties are remembered: very candid with double white flowers; Flore pleno: with white flowers dyed purple outside; Pride of Rochester: with white double flowers.
This plant variety prefers very sunny locations and is well protected from drafts. Deutzia can be planted even in semi-shaded areas but to obtain maximum development and the possibility of witnessing a copious flowering it is necessary to guarantee the plant the possibility of receiving direct sunlight for many hours a day. The lack of this will cause less growth and slower growth of the bush.
Deuzia prefers temperate climate and does not tolerate cold temperatures; in cold weather it is necessary to repair it with protective sheets and with mulching materials, leaves or straw that protect the roots from the effects of sub-zero temperatures.
The deuzia plants require, in summer, frequent and rather abundant watering, always checking, however, that the ground does not present dangerous water stagnations that could compromise the health of the plant. During the vegetative rest period the waterings are not so necessary and can be more spaced in winter.
The fertilizer develops the foliage to the disadvantage of flowering, so it will be necessary in the spring to add a third of sand and some mature manure in the soil.
For the multiplication of this variety of plant the cuttings are taken from the side semi-mature shoots in spring or autumn and are put to root in a mixed preparation of soil and sand. After rooting, they settle in individual jars to allow the new plants to gain vigor and strength.
Deuzia pruning is performed to allow a good flowering in the following year. The operation must be performed after flowering by cutting off the branches of a third of their length. In July the adult flowering stems are cut at ground level to allow the growth of new shoots.
In the spring dry branches or those ruined by the cold during the winter must be eliminated.
This plant variety is rather rustic and does not have particular needs as regards the type of soil in which to grow. For this reason any type of well-drained soil can be used. In fact, one of the problems that can affect the health of this plant is the fact that water may form at the base that could be very dangerous as it could allow the formation of root rot.
Deuzia - Deutzia: Parasites and Diseases
The buds of this type of plant are attacked in the spring by black aphids.
The gracilaria syringella butterfly larva infects the leaves, staining them with brown.
It is attacked by some fungi that cause yellow or brown spots on the leaves.
For this reason it is necessary to provide targeted insecticide treatments, which allow to effectively combat the different types of diseases that can affect deuzia; however, it will be necessary to remember that any product should be used when the plant is not yet in a flowering phase.
